Kenya Airways (KQ) is set to resume daily flights to Lamu this weekend after a three-week suspension.

Though the airline could not quantify its losses for the same period, its head of marketing and corporate communication, Michael Okwiri said the decision was sanctioned by Kenya Airports Authority and the KQ safety office, satisfied with the run-way repairs.

“The decision to resume services was made after an inspection team from both the Kenya Airports Authority and Kenya Airways which visited the site on Thursday last week,” said Mr Okwiri.

Kenya Airways now operates daily flights to Lamu using its 35-seater planes. The services were stopped on September 22nd in what airline CEO, Titus Naikuni , said was the unsafe condition for operations.

Mr Okwiri said beginning mid this month, the company’s 72-seater planes will provide additional capacity at peak periods on the Malindi route on Fridays and Sundays.

Africa Urged to Invest in Aviation

Investing in Aviation will enable the world have unlimited access to Africa and its numerous attractions.

Francis Nhema, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, said at a conference of Airlines Association of Southern Africa held in Victoria Falls at the weekend that tourism would only flourish if the skies were safe and accessible.

“There is a strong relationship or synergy between aviation and tourism,” he added, saying that one could not operate at full capacity without the other. “Aviation opens up the least accessible places to tourists, and indirectly contributes to employment opportunities in the marginal communities.”

He then urged the African governments to ensure that policies directing towards supporting the growth of the transport sector and not just focusing on tourism and also requested regional governments to continue engaging in bilateral and multilateral agreements in order to facilitate other national developments such as trade and cultural advancements

“You can have the mighty Victoria Falls in your backyard surrounded by the best hotels, but as long as you have no transport infrastructures to reach this gem, it is worth nothing,” he said.

He noted that Africa had a good record in aviation, adding that should propel the continent to maintain its standards, especially with the 2010 Fifa World Cup final in South Africa.

“African airlines have bounced back and recovered faster than our First World counterparts, because of limited terrorism threats, although this should not be a reason for complacency,” he said.

Minister Nhema said the global event should show the world how united the continent was and what it could offer to the tourists and visitors.

Emergency Landing for Ghana International Airline

Reports have indicated that a Ghana International Airlines (GIA) flight from Accra to London, yesterday, made an emergency landing in Spain.

The pilot was forced to make emergency landing after the loss of an engine from the aircraft.

In a related development, the Chief Executive Officer of GIA, Captain Joe Boachie, denied that the aircraft lease agreement between the airline and its leasing company had ended last week. He said it was therefore not true that the airline’s services could also be terminated. He said the only development concerning the airline was that its regular aircraft, which belonged to the leasing company, was undergoing routine maintenance.

He noted another aircraft, which had been provided by the same leasing company, was ferrying passengers. He said there was thus nothing to worry about and that the airline was in good terms with its leasing company.
